Thursday Thirteen #84 Banned Book Edition

Greetings, Kittens!

Happy Banned Book Week! In celebration of the freedom to read what we will and as a minor stride in the fight against censorship, here are 13 Books that were Challenged or Banned in 2010-2011. They are in no particular order, and since I assume there will be other lists, I have skipped about the listing to choose my 13. A book's presence on this list is not an endorsement, as I may or may not have read or liked them. The point is that it's your right and that of everyone to read them if you choose.

1. The Absolutely True Diary of a Part Time Indian by Sherman Alexie

2. Running With Scissors by Augusten Burroughs

3. Betrayed by Kristen Cast and P.C. Cast

4. Staying Fat for Sarah Byrnes by Chris Crutcher

5. Anne Frank: the Diary of a Young Girl by Anne Frank

6. Nickel and Dimed: On (Not) Getting By in America by Barbara Ehrenreich

7. The Hunger Games by Suzanne Collins

8. What's Happening to My Body: Book for Boys by Lynda Madaras

9. Song of Solomon by Toni Morrison

10. Catcher in the Rye by J.D. Salinger

11. Revolutionary Voices: A Multicultural Queer Youth Anthology edited by Amy Sonnie

12. Slaughterhouse-Five by Kurt Vonnegut

13. The Koran (Yes, it pains me to use a wiki link for a people's holy book, but I know you all take wiki with a grain of salt, so here you are.)

You would think in modern society we'd be past this. All blacklisting accomplishes is making people more intrigued to read the books. lol
Happy T13!

I have read 2 of those books, and am familiar with three more. It makes me wonder why anyone would want to ban them. If you don't like them don't read them.

Endlessly amazing
Like Adelle said, you would think we'd be past this, already.

It seems like the populace is somehow determined to regress into a state of pure, willful ignorance. I keep hoping it'll change.

In the meantime I have to find several of these titles - they intrigue me.

Happy TT!

I always love it when Diary of Anne Frank makes it onto a banned books list. *slapping forehead*

The Hunger Games was banned? Hah! I suppose it was because the book showed a totalitarian society.

Nos. 5 and 10 are banned? I wonder why and I honestly do not know why. Good list. Off to google now.

Why would anyone ban Nickel & Dimed? Truth hurt much? Oy vey! Great post - didn't realize it was banned book week! I'll have to check out the full list, too.

Thursday's thirteen: Banned books
Mark Twain has also been banned and I think J.K. Rawlings.

I think I know P.C. she's on one of the groups I'm on.

I've read a few of those books up there. They tried to ban books at my school when I was growing up. My mom was part of it. I still read them. I had teachers who gave me a way to read them without anyone getting in trouble.

Great list...and these days, sadly, I'm not surprised that the Koran is on a banned list. *deep sigh* Will we ever grow up?!

I didn't realize this was the week! Thank you for posting this and reminding me of the travesty.
